Abandoned in India

We have all seen Dev Patel and Freida Pinto in Slumdog Millionaire, and we are aware of the plight of millions of poor children across India, especially those living in the cities. But don’t think of those children right now. First, think of yourself. Have you ever felt abandoned? Passed over for a job, or discarded by a friend? Lost a loved one? Felt absolutely alone in a foreign country, unable to really fit in?

What a terrible feeling! Feeling abandoned is painful, and tugs on your stomach as much as your heart.

In such a moment of despair, solitude and abandonment, who do you wish comes to your rescue? How wonderful it would be if in that very moment someone had just reached out his or her hand and been able to make all the pain go away…imagine it.

Now think back again to a young boy or girl living in squalor in India, alone and abandoned, while the streets are aglow with families, celebrations and the flames of Diwali. Look into their eyes. You can be that hand that reaches out to help them and make it all go away.
